Weddings and Murphy’s Law: Sometimes It Is a Good Thing

By Joy Cagil Wedding planners advise the bride and the groom to be prepared well ahead of time, so they can evade Murphy’s Law, which says if anything can go wrong, it will. On the other hand, things going a little off may be what will bolster the memory of a wedding in everyone’s mind, especially if that little flaw leads to humor and laughter. Weddings are deeply personal and spiritual life events. Since life isn’t perfect, laughing at its spontaneous flaws allows us to embrace each other with love, laughter, and support. Here are a few humorous wedding events. Some of these wedding mishaps I have witnessed; friends have narrated the others. A wedding cake’s toppling over used to be so common that most reception hall managers had to learn to take precautions through trial and error. Still, in a few instances, no precaution can prevent this disaster, as it happened several years ago, when we attended a large wedding reception. Over the several steep stairs to the main reception hall, the wedding cake had to be carried rather than wheeled. Two waiters, one on each side, took the cake up the steps. Unexpectedly, a waiter tripped and the cake fell on the floor. The bride’s mother fainted from excitement while maintenance people scurried about. Since the reception room was a part of a big hotel, the management arranged several small cakes for the guests to enjoy. In another incident told to me, the bride tripped and fell into the cake. Some hilarious episodes have occurred in out-of-doors or garden weddings. In one summer wedding, although there was a canopy, the sun’s rays reflected directly on the bride’s face and the “I-do” photo of the bride came out as if the bride had no face. She was so horror-struck that her father had the scene repeated later, minus the guests. In another wedding where flowers and other decorations were hung on the sides of the canopy, a sudden gust of wind ripped the decorations apart, hurling them at the bride’s face and at the guests standing behind her. Fortunately, no one was hurt; the bride adjusted her headdress and the ceremony continued. Yet, in another reception, when the bride tossed the bouquet, it fell into the pool. One of the groomsmen dove into the pool and retrieved the bouquet for one of the bridesmaids who was his girlfriend. That groomsman and the bridesmaid married two months later. Who wouldn’t marry a man who would get wet to retrieve a girl a bouquet? In a Jewish wedding, when the bride’s chair was lifted in air, one leg of the chair started cracking. Luckily, one of the carriers with strong arms, reaching to its base of the chair, held the chair and the bride up. My favorite wedding mishaps involve the ring bearers and the flower girls. One cute little ring bearer and a flower girl, both four years old and cousins, were told to stand behind the bride and groom a little to the side at the altar. When the minister said, you may kiss the bride, the children kissed each other. This occasion must have given another twist to the phrase, “kissing cousins.” Another ring bearer was told to hold the pillow with both hands and never let go. He didn’t let the pillow go, but tossed the rings in the air while clutching the pillow. So, the poor best man shouldered the chore of retrieving the rings from under the pews. In another incident, where the ring bearer and the flower girl were also cousins, they walked down the aisle pushing each other. When they reached the altar, they broke into a fight, with the flower girl emptying the flower petals on the little boy’s head. Weddings are occasions of emotion and a little humor goes a long way. So, we should always look back on them with a chuckle or a smile. No matter what the Murphy’s Law and the Law of Etiquette may say, with hilarity, the wedding will remain as one of the most glorious moments of a couple’s life. Mystery Shopping: Frequently Asked Questions

By Cathy Stucker What is mystery shopping? Mystery shoppers go into businesses as customers. They interact with employees, make a purchase and possibly a return, then fill out an evaluation form describing what happened during the visit. Mystery shoppers get paid for providing this service. What kinds of businesses use mystery shoppers? Any business that deals with the public may use mystery shoppers: stores, restaurants, banks, hotels, salons, home builders, apartment complexes, gas stations, casinos, auto dealers, auto service centers, movie theaters, health clubs, pet stores, amusement parks, optical providers and more. You can get paid to get your hair cut or your eyes examined, have dinner, go to the bank, have your car worked on or fill up the gas tank, watch a movie, get your dog groomed, and lots of other things you like to (or have to) do. How much will I earn? Fees for a mystery shop (including purchase reimbursement when a purchase is required) may range from about $10 or $20 on up to $50, $100 or more. Fees will depend on the time required, difficulty, etc. The time required to complete a shop and fill out the form may be a few minutes to an hour or longer. Many shoppers do this in their spare time, and earn a few hundred dollars per month. Some consistently earn moreoften a lot more. It is not unusual for a part time shopper to make $500 to $1000 or more per month. There are some mystery shoppers who shop full time and earn a living this way. It’s not easy, though, to be a full time shopper. You will have to juggle lots of assignments with different requirements, due dates and report formats, so you must be very organized and disciplined. What are the requirements to be a mystery shopper? You can be any (adult) age, male or female. You need to be observant and able to follow directions. You must be reliable. You don’t have to have a degree or any special training, but good writing skills are important. The Certifications offered by the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, are helpful but are not required. Mystery shopping companies use the Internet to recruit shoppers, make assignments, and complete reports. Internet access is becoming a necessity to work with most mystery shopping companies. How do I become a mystery shopper? Apply to as many mystery shopping companies as you can. Legitimate mystery shopping companies will not charge you to apply, so do not pay to sign up with a company that says they will get you mystery shopping jobs. When you get your first assignments, do them on time and do a great job. That will make you a successful professional shopper. Copyright Cathy Stucker. Listen to Your Wife

By Gene Vasilevsky Can’t we just listen to them? The phrase “We have to talk” must be the most dreaded 4 words in an adult relationship. Married or just dating I’m sure you heard them once or twice. So every time you hear it the switch in your head comes on and you think to your self “here it comes” and than there is the conversation. Usually it starts around10 to 10:30 p.m., right before you have to go to sleep. You know that this conversation will not end on a good note because the “We have to talk” phrase sums it up. It’s not going to be pretty. Immediately you look at the clock and start thinking, it is 10:30 p.m., if this is over in half an hour I will get my 7 hours of sleep. Before you know it’s midnight and the conversation is still going. Now one and a half hours later you’re half asleep but still fighting for you life. You feel this whole conversation is pointless and you already said the things you will regret in the morning. So why is it when your wife or girlfriend mentions anything about a conversation we get defensive? I’m 31 and married man. My wife just gave birth to my first son and our lives just changed for ever. My daily schedule is probably similar to every working guy out there. I get up around 6 in the morning, feed the baby (he is 12 weeks old), play with him for about 30 minutes and try to put him to sleep. When my son is sleeping or just kicking around in his crib I take a shower and get dressed. Around 7:30 the nanny shows up and my next step is to take my dog out for a walk. Most of the time, after my morning shift, I get out of the house around 8. I go to work and come home around 6. When I walk through the door the baby is handed to me before I get a chance to take off my shoes, the 3rd shift starts. I feed the baby, rock him to sleep and take the dog for a walk. Around 8 at night, after a long day at work, I get to sit down on the couch, that is typically my week, Monday through Friday. During the weekend I hang out with my family, my son, wife and dog, run errands and watch Football on Sundays. Life got very monotonous, but that’s what most of us go through. Here is the problem: My wife feels that we are or will soon drift apart because we’re too busy for each other. Don’t get me wrong I love my wife and like to spend time with her but when my daily chores are over all I want to do is just sit down somewhere, anywhere will do. So the issue is that I don’t pay enough attention to her. She feels that we’re having problems. That’s why: “We have to talk”. What do I do after I hear that phrase? I get upset. How can we talk when I just sat down for the first time tonight? Initially, for the first minute or two, I try to listen to her. Later I feel like I’m a victim and get defensive. I don’t know what to do. So, why can’t we just let them speak their mind and be done with it? Is there something wrong with us men that we jump down their throats every time we hear that phrase? I have no idea. I just know that the fighting and arguing approach doesn’t work. If only I listened to her I would not be half awake right now. I’m a 31 year old married man with a 12 week old son. Charming Conversation: How to Make Others Eager to Chat with You

By Jerome Spector In conversations between two or more people, the more the others speak the more interesting and intelligent youll be. Up to a point. You cant leave the other person in a vacuum while you squirm silently and stare blankly ahead. Let me rephrase, the less you have to talk to keep up your side of a conversation, the more interesting and intelligent youll be. Unfortunately, saying just enough is an art and a skill that doesnt come naturally to most of us. Here are some guidelines you can follow. If You Have to Speak Make questions the greatest part of your contribution. Asking good questions requires knowledge and understanding of the subject, but not necessarily mastery of the subject. And dont ask questions merely in order to challenge the other persons views and demonstrate your superiority. Take the attitude of a nave investigator. Listen intently and ask follow-up questions. Find areas of agreement and mutual interest, and comment on them. When its your turn to contribute, try to state your point in a sentence, and follow with a question. When youre invited to tell a story or give your opinion, do it in a minute or less. Offer the conversation back to the otherswith a question. Go on only if you are invited to, and only for another minute or less. Dont get sucked into long monologs. What do you talk about? That takes some work. Pay attention to articles in popular magazines, TV newsmagazines, etc. They must interest readers and viewers, or advertisers wont pay. Pay attention to the things the others youre with are talking about. Contribute when you have a legitimate contribution to make. If you dont have a contribution and you are eager to charm the others, take the time to learn something relating to their interests. Then ask good questions the next time youre together. Keeping the Others Speaking Inviting others to speak and to keep speaking is also an art that takes skill and practice. Face the speaker dead on. Lean forward. Make eye contact. Let the other know youre with themuh-huh, I see what you mean, thats interesting, I didnt know that. Ask questions about things theyve mentioned. Try in this way to find common interests and agreement. When you find them, youll be able to ask better questions and your interest and enthusiasm will be real. Repeat the others last words or phrase in a questioning tone of voice. Thats all it takes sometimes to invite the other to elaborate, explain, embellish, and feel that youre really interested. Really interested? Jerome M. Spector, M.A., L.P.C., is a writer and psychotherapist. Wedding Video Contract Planning

By Jen Carter Couples should never hesitate when deciding to start a gift registry. Do you really need two toasters and a popcorn machine that youll never use? A gift registry is the perfect way of telling your guests exactly what it is that youd both love to receive as a wedding gift. Sometimes couples that are starting from scratch need certain things. Its better to receive things that youll need and use, rather than receiving a dust-collector. Right? Starting a wedding gift registry is actually quite simple. First, you both need to select a department store. Just a note: If youre registering at a high-end department store, make sure that you select several gifts that are affordable to a loved one that may not have a large budget. Call the department store that youve selected to schedule an appointment. Youll also wish to reserve a hand-held scanner to scan your items for their prices. Caution: Avoid the weekends at all costs. Pick a day like Monday or Wednesday evening to perform this duty. Its less crowded and the staff will be available to help you with any queries you may have. When you get to Kitchenware, go nuts with small gadgets and utensils. This is very considerate to your guests who may not be in the present financial status to spend $300 on a gas BBQ grill for you. Even though these small items add up, youll have more in your kitchen as a result. Additional small items to shop around for: picture frames, barware, wall-art, window coverings, decorative rugs, linens, and lamps. Remember, dont go for the most expensive because youre not the one buying it. Look at these things as if YOU were the one purchasing it. Do you feel its worth the money? Is it something that youd love to see in your home? If youve both answered yes, add it to the registry. Also, dont get caught up in the excitement of small appliances. If you add a microwave to your list, do you need a toaster oven? Its all about priorities. Needs versus wants. Its important that you keep that in mind throughout your tour in the department store. Most importantly, if you find yourselves disagreeing whether you need something or notwalk away from the item. Discuss it later, you can always add it to the list the next day, if its THAT important. Whatever it is, its definitely not worth fighting over! Jen Carter is owner of My Wedding Blog, a free wedding planning guide about weddings. Benefits of Human Growth Hormone - HGH Enhancing Products

By Danna Schneider Human Growth Hormone has often been referred to as the fountain of youth hormone. So, have we stumbled upon the proverbial fountain of youth with these new HGH enhancement supplements that claim to reduce fat, relieve aging symptoms such as wrinkles, increase energy and sex drive, promote sounder and deeper sleep cycles, and rejuvenate the body? Well, there are several faithful users of products in this arena (and I’m one of them) that will swear that since they have started taking HGH enhancing products, theyve experienced a wide range of pleasing and desirable benefits, and its not placebo. If your goal is to proactively slow your bodys aging process and optimize your personal longevity and quality of life, a quality HGH supplement may be just the thing for you. So, lets take a look at what these HGH products propose to do for you, and how they propose to offer such life-changing benefits to anyone who has the inclination to buy such products, and faithfully take the supplement as prescribed. As we age, the amount of HGH secreted by our bodys pituitary gland decreases, resulting in the symptoms of aging you see in your skin (wrinkles, loss of tone and firmness), energy level, libido, hair color (loss of hair color, or graying of hair), weight gain, and muscle to fat ratio. We could go on forever on the symptoms of aging, but well leave it at that for the sake of brevity, and because Im sure you dont have all day! HGH supplements do not contain actual Human Growth Hormone for this you would actually need to go to a doctor who does this type of thing, pay about $10,000 a year, and get injections of real Human Growth Hormone. Rather, most HGH supplement products employ the use of homeopathic medicine and stimulate the pituitary gland into producing more Human Growth Hormone, increasing its levels in the blood (usually a big difference will be noticed within a month to two months time, which allows for the HGH-promoting agents to gain higher levels in the blood and become effective). These HGH stimulating agents are what we call non prescription amino acid secretagogue supplementation. These compounds stimulate the pituitary gland and encourage it to secrete more HGH into the blood stream, hence the anti-aging benefits that are a direct result of increased HGH in the body. Studies have shown that amino acids such as arginine, glutamine and lysine can significantly increase the production of HGH. The tricky part is, many of these amino acid compounds can be destroyed by the digestive acids in the stomach, rendering any HGH enhancing abilities useless. If you are going to consider an HGH supplement in pill form, be sure there is a technology used to coat or protect the amino acids from being destroyed by your stomach acids. Most quality supplements in pill form will indicate that they employ this type of protective technology, just be sure to look for that information. Another popular method of delivery is powder and spray form. Whatever your preference, just make sure you purchase the supplement from a reputable homeopathic and/or herbal company that has a wide range of successful products, plenty of customer testimonials, and a money back or quality guarantee. I can personally testify that I have been using an HGH supplement for about two months, and Im no scientist, but I can definitely tell you, I feel great and I havent gotten sick once since Ive been on it, even with several stomach flu viruses and cold bugs going around the office. Ive also notice that my sleep quality has improved and I wake up feeling more refreshed, my skin seems to be smoother and more toned, my fatty areas and cellulite seem to be improving/diminishing more and more every day, my appetite has decreased, I have more energy and can think more clearly at work without the typical fogginess I used to get halfway through my day, and my eyes are brighter and more full of life. Overall, my quality of life has definitely improved since about a month after I started the supplement. Coincidence? Maybe - but I doubt it. Im what you might call an herbal-product-of-the-moment junkie. Ive experimented with many of the fads of the moment in the herbal and alternative medicine field, and Ive never experienced such noticeable and obvious results as I have with HGH as I have with any of these other products. Try it it may be just what youre looking for to slow the aging process, improve your quality of life overall, and get the youthful edge back. Dissatisfied With Work? Perhaps It’s You

By Peter Vajda, Ph.D Just about every month, there’s a new research report detailing the seemingly higher and higher degree of worker dissatisfaction. Whether it’s a Gallup poll or a Conference Board report, the results are strikingly similar — workers are becoming more and more dissatisfied with their work. While the majority of “reasons” for dissatisfaction usually point to elements of the workplace itself such as: management style, task design, work role, environmental conditions or opportunities for growth, few if any, of these reports ever point to the possibility that the employee himself or herself may be a major contributing factor to their own dissatisfaction. In many instances of worker dissatisfaction, it’s a question of “physician, heal thyself.” In a culture of blame and victim consciousness, many dissatisfied and disgruntled workers should first look inside, rather than outside, for the root causes of their dissatisfaction. Here’s why. First, I would echo Karl Marx, and paraphrase something he said: where the economy creates a class of losers, where wealth gravitates easily into the hands of the haves, the fortunes of the have-nots become more desperate. For me this translates into: in our culture, most everyone operates from an insidious and incessant need to be “somebody”. Thus, for me, the dissatisfaction I read about in workplace satisfaction studies such as the Gallup Polls and Conference Board Report is an aspect of this desperation. My take on the dissatisfaction pointed to in such reports is that often one’s perspective of dissatisfaction is largely a philosophical one. Meaning? Many of the folks who are expressing and experiencing “dissatisfaction” have a misplaced worldview, or perspective, that dictates how they view themselves and their life at work, and the meaning of work. And relatedly, along with the rise in dissatisfaction, is a related rise in stress, boredom, burnout and rustout. Rustout is a lack or deficiency not of energy, but of passion Many folks are “making a living” but, at the same time, lack a sense of significance, a “meaning” in what they do. At the end of the day, many will admit they’re in it for the wrong reason. In many instances, rather than exploring the nature of the dissatisfaction by going “inside” and look at the real reasons for their dissatisfaction, many workers seem to find fault with, blame, and criticize the externals: the education and training programs, the health and pension programs (albeit, today quite justifiable), management, and environmental conditions etc. At the end of the day, however, many folks burn out without ever having been on fire. In order to be “somebody”, they allow themselves to be devoured by “the corporation” and spend relentless amounts of energy and time (a lifetime, for many), scratching and clawing their way up the corporate ladder to achieve corporate success, but at what cost? To be “somebody?” For many dissatisfied workers, they have set aside their dreams (once, real dreams) and instead tailored their lives and personalities to what the market demands, for example, down to the art and sciences of “power dressing”, power lunching, having/creating “winning personalities,” etc., …all the while seeped in state of emptiness, lack and deficiency. Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. Its not about the “work”. Again, initially, resistant and not wanting to go “inside” to explore one’s discontent, dis-ease and dissatisfaction, many seek the easy way “out” and blame externals as the excuses for their dissatisfaction. So, many dissatisfied workers live in an outer-directed culture, in which they remain strangers to themselves, disconnected from themselves, have no sense of their own intuitions and feelings and “real wants and needs.” Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. It’s not about the “work.” So, in our current workplace culture, many folks are driving themselves to their own “spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical” poorhouse, in new automobiles, eating calorie-free foods, watching plasma TVs, etc., all the while bemoaning the reality of increased stress, decreased productivity in an environment polluted by our industry. Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. It’s not the “work.” It would be curious to know if many of these dissatisfied folks would, in fact, be dissatisfied if they lived a life in which their work fit them like a skintight suit, if their were their purpose in life, if their work were who they were. In what, in this country, is a relentless struggle for so many to “be somebody” at the expense of others being “nobodies,” many have lost sight of the true and real values that support one’s mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well-being, especially at work. Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. It’s not the “work.” So many are sacrificing their health, on every level, in order to be counted among the “have” folks. For what? So-called “happiness”? In the January 17, 2005 Special Issue of Time Magazine, reference is made to the somebody-nobody experience as “reference anxiety”, that is, “keeping up with the Joneses”, constantly comparing one’s self and one’s “stuff” with someone else’s and much of this takes place in our work environments and is characteristic of many of our workplace cultures.. Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. It’s not the “work.” This “reference anxiety” syndrome also accounts for the widening gap in income distribution. The Time article states: “…Paradoxically, it is the very increase in money…that triggers dissatisfaction…” and, this is part of the dissatisfaction that folks bring to work with them, in addition to the dissatisfaction that folks say they experience due to the work itself. In other words, many are taking out their deep feelings of lack and deficiency by blaming their work by often blaming their workplace in some way, shape or form. Thus, leading to dissatisfaction. It’s not the “work.” Finally the Time Magazine article (and countless others that speak to these issues) references the workplace: “People who love their jobs feel challenged by their work..” Notice, it’s not the reverse. In reality, the “love” of the job comes first. The love of the work one does. So, yes, many folks are dissatisfied with their work. The Time magazine article states, people who love their jobs “…find meaning in what they do.” Again, the reality is countless folks simply do not, and cannot, find meaning in what they do, but they do it, and the $10 question, “WHY?” Why do they do what they do? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, in the Time Magazine article, states, “…Anything can be enjoyable if the elements of flow is present. Within that framework, doing a seemingly boring job can be a source of greater fulfillment than one ever thought possible.” The Dalai Lama says, “I do nothing. His work and life are the same. Anything can be enjoyable. Anything. These two folks do not say it’s the manager’s responsibility to make anyone happy. They don’t say It’s the flowers and plants that make folks happy. They don’t say it’s the extra percentage in the bonus, or the new training equipment, etc. that accounts for one’s happiness. They simply point to what’s going on, or not going on, “inside” a person that accounts for their satisfaction. It’s not the “work.” So, the question of job satisfaction starts “inside.” An important question to consider is: “What takes one out of that state of flow and presence and moves one in the direction of “dissatisfaction?” Until and unless one gets to “root causes” of dissatisfaction and unhappiness, which are, at the end of the day, “inside” issues, more than outside issues, such job satisfaction reports can only describe the landscape surface, but certainly not explain why the landscape is barren. Again, one needs to look underneath the surface of the barrenness. So, exploring and inquiring underneath the landscape, that is “going inside”, leads to some questions: -Why can’t I forge true and real friendships and relationships at work? Really, really, true and real relationships and friendships, not surface acquaintanceships? What gets in the way of that? -Why are trust, honesty, openness, and an emotional feeling of safety lacking in so many workplaces and within so many teams and groups? -Why are bullying and gossiping so prevalent in our workplaces? -Why do so few find real meaning in their work? -Why is true and real well-being lacking in so many work environments? Winston Churchill said, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, once they’ve exhausted every other possibility.” Perhaps, one day, not too far off, we’ll find that it’s not only about 401Ks, task design, work roles, the latest and greatest training tools, cool icebreakers, plants in the atrium, and the same business and leadership models, theories and concepts in new “wine skins.” Perhaps, one day, not too far off, we can look outside the box of common dissatisfaction to “new” possibilities, new answers. Such as: -people exploring and going after what truly brings them fulfillment in their work - remembering that even a boring job can be a fine experience when one is in touch with oneself. And thus not completely dependent for “someone out there to make satisfaction happen for me” -people discovering their values that emanate from their true and real self, their heart and essence, from their moral compass, than from their ego-driven needs and materialistic “taste du jour” -people feeling connected first, to their self, inside, their inner spirit, on an inner plane, which can then, and only then, lead to true connections, interactions, relationships and contactfulness with others -people exploring their own internal deficiencies and feelings of lack which lead to petty jealousies and envy of others, dissatisfaction that fosters conflict, gossiping and bullying -people who put people before work, in an honest and sincere and self-responsible manner -people who have discovered their passion and have the strength and courage to live it through their work or to seek it out in their work, doing what they truly love to do -people who stay physically, mentally and emotionally healthy, and spiritually strong -people truly living a life rather than obsessed with a lifestyle So, perhaps, the “dissatisfaction” element as it relates to work is directly intertwined with life in general; that, at the end of the day, the workday, there is no “compartmentalizing” our lives. So, what is it about one’s life in general that brings one to find dissatisfaction, not only at work but in other aspects of one’s life? In the Time Magazine article, we read: “clinical depression is 3 to 10 times as common today than two generations ago…money jangles in our wallets and purses, but we are no happier for it, and for many, more money leads to depression.” And, dissatisfaction. So, what is it, really, really, about work that leads so many to be dissatisfied? Perhaps the dissatisfaction element lies on a much deeper level of the psyche and it’s about the inner person, not about the externals. The Time Magazine article states that “…millions of us spend more time and energy pursuing the things money can buy than engaging in activities that create real fulfillment in life” Thus, it’s curious that of the thousands of business books that are published each year, there’s hardly one chapter devoted to “friendship” (real and true friendship…not the “good-old-boys-back-slapping stuff that is a “faux” substitute) in the workplace.. Dissatisfaction. It’s not the “work.” Relationships rule the world, even the world of work. Finding meaning rules one’s deeper sense of happiness, fulfillment, and well-being, even in the world of work. However, it’s one’s relationship, first, with one’s self that must be examined to explore the true and real root causes of dissatisfaction. When we come to life with the right values, and are grounded on a foundation of truth, honesty, sincerity and self-responsibility, in our relationship to our self, first, and then others, dissatisfaction can more easily morph into satisfaction. The spirit of an organization begins and ends with the spirit of each individual. So, really, really, why is satisfaction falling? Perhaps, for some, it starts with “me,” not “it” or “them.” Copyright 2005, Peter G. Vajda, Ph.D. and SpiritHeart. All rights reserved worldwide. Allow Mother Nature some Dignity

By Vernon Stent For every action there is a reaction. So said Newton. Although he was referring to the law of motion, I think that this law can also be applied to nature. Even if we toss away a sweet wrapper, a bird may use it to build a nest. A child may spill their cola and soon enough some ants may come along and feed on it. If we construct a building where there used to be wasteland, then nature will react. Some creatures will avoid the new building; others will be attracted to it. In recent times some authorities have built special underground tunnels for badgers under new roads. In fact there are countless examples of schemes where nature has been given a helping hand. The trouble is, do we know what effect our improvements are having on the rest of the eco-system? Is there a danger that we will do even more damage? It could also be argued that humans, including its roads, buildings and machines, are also part of the eco-system. Should we try to neutralize the effect of our actions on other species? Another consideration is the problem of extinction. We tend to try to save creatures that are on the point of extinction. It could be argued that an endangered species is no longer viable and should be left alone to die out in order to allow the remainder to thrive. We increasingly fiddle with nature in order to help it out. The problem is that for every action that affects nature, there will be a reaction. We come along and try to prevent the reaction by instituting another action, which itself may produce other reactions that we may not have intended. The problem is rarely debated, it seems. Surely there are two extremes: 1. build and be dammed and 2. dont build at all. We seem to be moving to a mid point of: build and manage nature. This is where there may be a problem. Surely we are not qualified to manage the might of nature. Perhaps we should respect nature and allow it the dignity to cope on its own with our more necessary building works. For the less important buildings and machines well perhaps we should not build them at all. I am suggesting that we in fact go to BOTH extremes, but not take the middle road of trying to manage nature. We should at least have a decent debate about it. Whole industries have built up around nature conversation, forest and river management. I wonder sometimes if the conservation industry itself is a mighty machine that needs to be constantly fed with more and more things to do in order to employ its ever growing army. Surely we can reduce our need to construct ever more powerful machines and larger and more numerous buildings but also, we surely can reduce our need to interfere with Mother Nature and allow her some dignity. Nature has the ability to bite back. If you are going to build a house where there were once fields, you may find out that some creatures will not be aware of trespass laws and will try to enter your new home. This is particularly true of houseflies. Try building a tunnel for them! I suppose you could be very eco-friendly and obtain thousands of spiders to weave webs in order to trap them. But then, kidnapping all these spiders and farming them yourself could deprive the food chain of a resource and destabilize it. Perhaps it is best not to fiddle too much with nature. Just buy a fly killer machine from http://www.eeeee.co.uk. That way the flies will only be killed as required - and nature will cope very well on its own. Flies - the ugly side of nature - can be dealt with buying these fly killers. Do You Think A Cattle Prod Could Change Your Life Forever?

By Jenny Drake So you’d like to change your life forever? But don’t know how a cattle prod could help? Or even what a cattle prod is? Rest assured, it’s not the usual treatment prescribed for human transformations. It’s actually a short length of steel with an electric charge running through it. When applied to the rumps of cattle it persuades them to do things they previously had no intention of doing. Not nice… but very effective. And very quick. And that, after all, is the result most life-changers are seeking. The reality in the world today is that there are many people hoping to transform their lives. Wishing. Most people in the Western world are overweight, and the zap required to change it seems to be missing. Every year we just get fatter, and more indolent. Oh, some get obsessed with dieting and losing weight, but others don’t seem to care. And neither will achieve what they want. That’s right, they’ll fail. Whether they try or not. Why? Probably because they don’t really know what they want. They have either unrealistic expectations, or they have none. And they’ll doom themselves to a life devoid of the good, the fun and the joy that vitality can bring. Vitality comes from simple things - things like dropping the spare tire from your waist and the flab from other parts. The plain fact is that ridding yourself of even a few pounds can add enjoyable years to your life. The facts are clear: excess weight reduces stamina, it stresses joints, and it causes illnesses from heart disease to diabetes. And people who decide to start each day with the intention of eating better and exercising better are beginning to find life becoming much easier than they ever expected. These five steps are simple changes, but they can add up to a virtual cattle prod with the power to change your life: 1. Start your day with a lovely big glass of cold water. It gets your systems into motion, reduces hunger and is a surprisingly good way to start the day. 2. Within an hour of getting out of bed, eat your breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day and the mere fact that you eat it before you get about doing things means two things - your body will start to function properly, and you won’t be tempted to ‘catch up’ on food when you sit down for a belated brunch. 3. Fruit is an excellent source of nutrition, so during the day, eat at least two servings of fresh fruit. (A serving is the equivalent of an apple.) If you vary the fruits you eat you will get a good mix of nutrients and fiber. 4. Try to eat a salad every day, and try for at least five servings of vegetables. When you feel the urge to snack, switch to celery or carrot, or some other appealing veggie. 5. Now, fried and sweet foods. These are real traps. You can never really drain all the oil away from fried food, so if you eat it you can be sure you’re adding fat and calories. And sweets also add calories - plus a few other nasties. Cut them out wherever you can. Pretty easy really, isn’t it? Simple changes. But… yes, we’re human, and nothing is really that easy when you actually go to do it. So try this: keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat. Check what you’ve logged at the end of the day - and be prepared for a shock. Actual figures can be a very good incentive to do the right thing. A full program to turn your life around also has to include how you spend your day. By definition, couch potatoes are fat - so get up and go for a walk. The latest dietary and exercise advice is that you should enjoy at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. That can include the physical version of activities you normally do in a day anyway - bike riding instead of bus riding, stair-climbing instead of climbing into an elevator etc. Just think about your own day, and you’ll soon find lots of ways you can replace ‘easy’ with ‘healthy’ ways of doing your normal tasks. So, do you really need a cattle prod to change your life? Prods like heart attacks, exhaustion, strokes … The simple act of deciding to change can often be all the prod you need. Working out a simple program based on the ideas above, and avoiding anything that could be considered too hard, or too complicated in the beginning. And then doing it. Day after day … until your cattle prod is a habit, and you’re enjoying life the way it was meant to be lived! By Jenny Drake.
